Air Fryer Hot Dogs With Toasted Buns

Make juicy, lightly browned hot dogs in your air fryer, then toast the buns. Approximately 6 minutes to heat the hot dogs plus 2 minutes for buns; preheating, when needed, takes additional time.
Prep Time 3 minutes
Cook Time 8 minutes
Total Time 11 minutes
Servings: 4 hot dogs
Course: Lunch, Main Course
Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 4 fully cooked refrigerated hot dogs
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • ketchup optional, to taste
  • mustard optional, to taste
  • sweet pickle relish optional, to taste
  • finely chopped onions optional, to taste

Equipment

  • Air Fryer
  • Kitchen tongs
  • Instant-read food thermometer when needed

Method

  1. If required by your appliance, preheat the air fryer to 400°F. Preheating time is additional to the recipe card total.
  2. Remove four fully cooked refrigerated hot dogs from their packaging. If desired, make a few shallow diagonal cuts, or leave them whole.
  3. Arrange the hot dogs in one layer in the basket, leaving space between them. Do not stack.
  4. Air fry at 400°F for approximately 5–7 minutes (6 minutes for the stated recipe-card cook time). Check after 4–5 minutes; turn once if needed for even browning. Continue until thoroughly heated.
  5. Place each heated hot dog inside a bun. Return to the air fryer for approximately 1–2 minutes (2 minutes for the stated card time), checking after 1 minute. Ensure lightweight buns cannot blow toward the heating element.
  6. Remove carefully, add ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, or other preferred toppings, and serve hot.

Notes

Time breakdown: Prep 3 minutes + hot dog cooking 6 minutes + bun toasting 2 minutes = 11 minutes total. Hot dog cooking may vary 5–7 minutes; preheat, if required, is an additional 3–5 minutes. Frozen fully cooked hot dogs: start at 380°F for approximately 8–10 minutes, checking at 8 minutes; heat thoroughly and longer if necessary. Jumbo refrigerated fully cooked hot dogs: about 7–9 minutes at 400°F, checking at 6 minutes. Only use fully cooked hot dogs; raw sausage requires different cooking guidelines. For people at increased risk of listeriosis, heat hot dogs until steaming hot or 165°F. Reheat cooked leftovers to 165°F and refrigerate promptly, consuming within 3–4 days. Do not leave lightweight buns unattended in the basket. Cooking times are researched starting values, not Fryer Bites kitchen-tested measurements.
